What is therapeutic massage ?
Therapeutic (or deep-tissue) massage uses firm sustained pressure on the deeper layers of muscle and fascia. It’s the format most requested by office workers, sedentary professionals and anyone with chronic shoulder / lower-back tension.
Therapeutic massage works on the deeper layers of muscle and fascia, where chronic tension accumulates from posture, repetitive movement, and stress. Distinct from the Swedish, which focuses on overall relaxation, the therapeutic targets specific areas with firm sustained pressure.
When it’s the right choice
- Chronic neck tension from screens (telework, office life).
- Lower-back stiffness from prolonged sitting.
- Trapezius knots that come back week after week.
- Forearm and wrist tension (mouse posture).
- Recovery after a long-haul flight, especially in business class.
What it feels like
The pressure can be intense during the session (a 6 or 7 on 10 on knots), then releases. The simple rule : “tolerable discomfort that feels good afterwards” = OK. “Unbearable” or “sharp stabbing pain” = stop, lower the pressure. No serious therapist pushes beyond your threshold.
The day after
Mild soreness for 24-48h is normal and even a good sign : it means the manual work reached the deep layers. Drink water, move gently, sleep long. Disappears within 72h. If symptoms persist beyond, contact us.
Frequency
For a one-off knot : 1 session usually relieves significantly. For chronic tension : 2-3 sessions spaced 1-2 weeks apart, then monthly maintenance. We don’t push subscriptions ; we tell you honestly if your situation needs only one visit.

A typical session at home in Geneva, step by step.
1. Detailed check-in
5-10 minutes to map tension areas, recent activities, sleep quality, work setup. The therapist orients the session based on what you describe.
2. Warm-up phase
10-15 minutes of moderate-pressure work to prepare the deeper layers. Skipping this step would make the deep work painful and counter-productive.
3. Deep targeted work (30 – 60 min)
Sustained pressure on knots, slow strokes along the muscle fibres, trigger-point release. The therapist asks for feedback on pressure throughout.
4. Pressure adjustment in real time
Your feedback drives the intensity. The therapist may release on areas that are too sensitive and return to them after warming further.
5. Stretching & integration
Slow passive stretches to integrate the work into your movement patterns. Particularly useful for office workers.
6. Self-care advice
2 or 3 specific stretches or exercises adapted to your situation. We don’t sell programs : just give you what helps.
Is therapeutic the same as deep tissue ?
Yes, the two terms are largely interchangeable in spa and home-massage practice. Both describe firm sustained pressure on the deep muscle layers, with targeted work on tension areas. Slight nuance : in some traditions deep tissue is more athletic-focused, therapeutic more about chronic civilian tension. We use them as synonyms.
Will it hurt ?
Pressure may be uncomfortable during the session on specific knots : that’s normal. Sharp stabbing pain is not normal : you say stop, the pressure drops. Most clients describe a 6-7 out of 10 intensity that releases after 10-15 seconds. Mild soreness for 24-48h after is expected (similar to a workout).
Can I get therapeutic during pregnancy ?
Not in this format. Pregnant women receive the prenatal protocol, which uses lighter pressure and side-lying positions adapted to the trimester. Deep tissue work is contraindicated for pregnant women.
I have low blood pressure. Is it safe ?
Yes, with adjustments. The therapist will use slower transitions to avoid lightheadedness, and ask you to stand up gradually at the end. Mention it at booking.
I take blood thinners or aspirin daily. Should I worry ?
Mention it at booking. Anticoagulant patients can receive therapeutic massage but the pressure is moderated and bruising risk noted. Some areas (back of knees, neck triangle) are treated more gently.
Do I tip the therapist ?
Tipping is not expected in Switzerland. The price you see is the price you pay. If you genuinely loved the session and want to express it, the best thing is a message of feedback (helps us calibrate matching) or a recommendation to a friend. Cash tips are accepted but not expected.
How soon can I work out after a deep tissue ?
Light activity (walking, yoga, gentle bike) the same day is fine. Intense exercise (running, weights, CrossFit) : wait 24-48h. Your muscles are in repair mode and high intensity could prolong soreness.
