What is reflexology ?
Reflexology is a thousand-year-old practice : pressure applied to specific zones of the feet maps to corresponding organs and systems of the body. Modern reflexology focuses on deep relaxation and the parasympathetic effect more than on the traditional energetic claims.
Foot reflexology is the gentlest of the formats we offer. You stay fully clothed, only shoes and socks come off. The therapist works seated at your feet for 60 minutes (or 90 in the longer format), using precise thumb and finger pressure on the reflex zones.
Why it works (the modern view)
The traditional reflexology theory maps each foot zone to a body organ. The modern view is more cautious : whether or not the zones literally correspond to organs is debated, but the parasympathetic effect of sustained foot work is real and documented. Foot reflexology lowers cortisol, improves sleep quality, and reduces self-reported anxiety in multiple studies.
When it’s the right choice
- Chronic insomnia or difficulty falling asleep.
- High stress with rumination (you can’t stop thinking).
- Digestive sluggishness without a medical cause.
- Preference for staying clothed (privacy concerns, religious or personal reasons).
- Pregnancy (specifically suited, no contraindications when done by a trained therapist).
- Children or teenagers who don’t want a full massage.
- Elderly clients with mobility limitations.
What it feels like
Most clients describe it as ‘deeply relaxing in an unexpected way’. The pressure on the feet is firm but not painful. Many people fall asleep during the session. Effect lasts 12-24h with notable sleep improvement on the first night.
Frequency
For chronic insomnia or stress : weekly sessions for 4-6 weeks usually shift the pattern, then bi-monthly maintenance. For one-off events (high-stress week, post-trauma) : a single session helps significantly.

A typical session at home in Geneva, step by step.
1. Brief check-in
Your main concern (sleep, stress, digestion, general relaxation), any foot injuries or recent surgery, sensitivities.
2. Position setup
You sit reclined on your couch or in a comfortable chair. Feet on a bolster. Therapist sits in front. You stay fully clothed.
3. Foot warm-up (10 min)
Light overall massage of both feet to warm the tissues and create the relaxation baseline. The deep work would be uncomfortable without this step.
4. Reflex zone work (40 min)
Precise thumb pressure on the specific zones depending on your concern. Sleep : solar plexus, head zones, pineal point. Digestion : stomach, intestine zones. Stress : adrenal, kidney, head zones.
5. Closing pressure work
Gentle rhythmic pressure to close the session. By this point, most clients are deeply relaxed or have fallen asleep.
6. Hydration and self-care
A glass of water at the end (the parasympathetic shift can leave a slight ‘wow, that hit hard’ feeling). Brief advice on what to do that evening to sustain the effect.
Does reflexology really work, or is it placebo ?
The traditional theory (foot zones mapping to organs) is debated and not strongly supported by anatomical research. But the documented effect of sustained foot work on relaxation, sleep and cortisol is real, regardless of the mechanism. Many of our clients book reflexology specifically for sleep and find it more effective than they expected.
I’m very ticklish on my feet. Will I be able to tolerate it ?
Yes, almost always. Reflexology pressure is firm and slow : not the light brushing that triggers ticklishness. The first 2-3 minutes might feel ticklish, then your nervous system adapts. If you’re truly hyper-sensitive, mention it and the therapist starts even slower.
Can I have reflexology during pregnancy ?
Yes, reflexology is particularly suited to pregnancy. Pressure on specific ankle points is avoided (the same ones avoided in prenatal massage), but the rest of the protocol is safe and very appreciated for sleep disruption and water retention. From the 4th month onwards in our standard protocol.
Can I get reflexology if I have a foot injury ?
Depends on the injury. Plantar fasciitis : yes, often helpful. Sprained ankle (less than 4 weeks) : we may decline or work only the other foot. Fungal infection or active wound : we decline. Recent foot surgery : medical clearance required.
Is it covered by insurance ?
Some LCA (complementary insurance) plans cover reflexology by a registered therapist (ASCA, RME). Check your contract under ‘alternative medicine’ or ‘reflexology’ specifically. LAMal does not cover it. Your therapist can provide an itemised invoice for LCA reimbursement.
Reflexology vs foot massage : same thing ?
Different. A foot massage is general relaxation work on the feet, no specific zones targeted. Reflexology uses specific pressure points based on the reflexology map and focuses on the parasympathetic effect through those points. Reflexology is slower, more precise, and often deeper.
What if I fall asleep ?
Very common, especially in reflexology. The therapist continues normally and wakes you gently at the end. You’ll feel deeply rested. Many clients book reflexology specifically because they sleep on the table : it’s not a problem.
